One of the things I pay close attention to when I’m working with Shopify merchants is the technology stack.
I don’t believe a growing ecommerce brand should have to spend a fortune on its marketing platform just because its customer list is growing.
That is one of the reasons I recently started looking closely at Spoks.
Spoks is an email and SMS marketing platform built for Shopify merchants, and what immediately caught my attention is the pricing structure. For smaller and mid-sized brands, the cost of the marketing platform can become a real issue as email lists grow. Spoks takes a different approach.

Email Marketing Without the Escalating Monthly Bill
Spoks currently offers a free plan for smaller lists, with its paid plan listed at $35 per month.
The paid plan includes unlimited email sends, flows, segmentation, the mobile app, free migration and support, and up to 200,000 contacts. SMS is handled separately through credits that can be topped up and do not expire.
That pricing structure caught my attention because I work with merchants who are trying to put more money into customer acquisition, CRO, creative, affiliates & Influencers and inventory — not simply into maintaining their email platform.
If I can help a merchant put an additional few hundred dollars a month into growth instead of software overhead, that money can actually go toward acquiring customers.
What Does Spoks Actually Do?
Spoks isn't simply a newsletter-sending tool.
It combines email marketing, SMS, automation, segmentation, analytics and AI-assisted content creation in one Shopify-focused platform.
Some of the features currently listed include:
- Email campaigns
- SMS campaigns
- Automated flows
- Segmentation
- Targeting
- Triggers and rules
- Customer tagging
- Real-time analytics
- Reporting
- Tracking
- Custom fonts
- Localization
- Email-domain management
- APIs and webhooks
- Import and export capabilities
- Mobile management
- Built-in AI tools
It also has a mobile app, which I particularly like because ecommerce doesn't stop when I'm sitting at my desk. Being able to create, publish and monitor campaigns from a phone is genuinely useful for merchants and marketing teams that are constantly moving.

Automation Is Where It Gets Interesting
For me, the real value of an email platform isn't sending a pretty newsletter once a week.
It's what happens between those newsletters.
Welcome sequences, abandoned-cart messaging, post-purchase communication, customer segmentation, promotional flows and targeted campaigns are where email and SMS can become an actual revenue channel rather than simply another marketing expense.
Spoks includes flows, triggers, rules, targeting and segmentation, giving merchants the ability to build those automated customer journeys.
That matters because I would rather see a merchant build a smart automated system once and let it work continuously than have a marketing team manually recreate the same communications every week.
SMS Without Buying Into a Giant Platform
SMS can be incredibly effective for ecommerce, but I also see merchants hesitate to add another expensive marketing platform simply to get SMS functionality.
Spoks includes SMS as part of the platform, with credits purchased separately. Those SMS credits don't expire, according to the current Shopify App Store listing.
That gives merchants another channel without requiring them to completely rebuild their marketing stack around SMS.
Of course, SMS marketing still needs to be handled responsibly and in compliance with applicable messaging laws and customer consent requirements. Having the technology is one thing; using it correctly is another.
AI Is Built In
Another feature I find interesting is the built-in AI.
Spoks currently describes AI tools for optimizing content and supports connections with tools including ChatGPT and Claude.
I'm a big believer in using AI to speed up the work — particularly first drafts, subject lines, variations, campaign concepts and repetitive marketing tasks.
But I don't want AI replacing the marketing strategy.
The strategy still needs to come from understanding the customer, the product, the offer, the margins and where the customer is in the buying journey.
AI can help us move faster. It doesn't eliminate the need to know what we're trying to accomplish.

The Pricing Is the Part I Find Most Interesting
The current Spoks paid plan is listed at $35 per month and includes up to 200,000 contacts, unlimited email sends, flows, segmentation and the mobile app. SMS is usage-based through credits.
For a small or mid-sized Shopify merchant, that is a very different cost structure from a platform where the monthly bill increases substantially as the database grows.
And this is important.
A merchant shouldn't have to be afraid to grow their email list.
I've seen merchants become hesitant about collecting more subscribers because they know the next pricing tier is coming.
That's backwards.
Your customer database should be an asset.
Why I'm Paying Attention to Spoks
I'm not interested in recommending technology simply because it's inexpensive.
The software still has to work.
What interests me about Spoks is the combination of affordability and the features that Shopify merchants actually need: email, SMS, automation, segmentation, analytics, AI and mobile access.
The Shopify App Store currently lists Spoks at 4.9 stars across 48 reviews, although merchants should always evaluate an app for their own requirements and workflow rather than relying on ratings alone.
For me, the bigger question is whether a merchant can use the money saved on technology to actually grow the business.
That's where the economics get interesting.
If you're a $500,000, $1 million or $5 million Shopify brand, I don't want your technology bill growing simply because your customer list is growing.
I'd rather put that money into CRO, creative, affiliates, paid media, SEO, retention and customer acquisition.

My Take
I've spent a lot of years working with ecommerce marketing platforms, and I've learned that more expensive doesn't automatically mean better for every merchant.
Some brands need extremely sophisticated enterprise systems.
Others don't.
A growing Shopify merchant may need excellent email marketing, SMS, segmentation, automation, reporting and the ability to move quickly — without paying an enormous monthly software bill.
That's why Spoks has my attention.
For merchants who have been watching their email platform costs climb as their database grows, I think it's worth putting Spoks on the shortlist and taking a serious look at what it can do.
The goal isn't to have the most expensive marketing stack.
The goal is to have a marketing stack that makes economic sense — and leaves more money available to actually grow the business.
